5-Day Metabolism Fix

Day 4 of 5

Movement That Helps (Not Hurts) Your Metabolism

If you've been told to "move more" and found it made you more tired, more inflamed, and no lighter — you're not failing. You've been given the wrong kind of advice.

More exercise is not always better. For women in perimenopause and beyond, the wrong type of exercise can actively stall fat loss.

High-intensity training — daily spin classes, long runs, back-to-back HIIT sessions — raises cortisol significantly. For a body already under hormonal and metabolic stress, this can suppress thyroid function, increase inflammation, and make the body hold on to fat even more tightly.

This doesn't mean exercise is bad. It means the type and amount matters enormously at this stage of life.

What actually works after 40:

🏋️

Strength training

Builds and preserves muscle — your metabolic engine. Even 2–3 sessions per week has profound effects on insulin sensitivity, body composition, and bone density.

2–3x per week, 30–45 minutes

🚶

Daily walking

Low cortisol impact, improves insulin sensitivity, reduces inflammation, and supports mental health. The most underrated tool for metabolic health.

20–30 minutes daily, ideally in daylight

🧘

Restorative movement

Yoga, stretching, and Pilates lower cortisol and improve sleep quality — both of which directly affect metabolism.

1–2x per week or daily short practices

Today's Key Insight

If you're exhausted after your workouts and craving sugar, that's your body telling you it's under too much stress. Rest is not laziness — it's part of the prescription.

Today's Action

Go for a 20-minute walk today — outside if possible. That's it. No pressure, no metrics, no performance. Just move at a pace that feels pleasant. Notice how you feel afterwards.
