5-Day Metabolism Fix

Day 2 of 5

The Hormones Nobody Talks About

Most people know about oestrogen and progesterone. But when it comes to weight and metabolism in your 40s, there are three other hormones that have an enormous impact — and they rarely come up in conversation.

Cortisol — The Stress Hormone

Role: Regulates your stress response, blood sugar, and fat storage — especially around the belly.

What helps: Sleep, breathwork, reducing over-exercising, eating enough carbohydrates, and calm morning routines.

Insulin — The Storage Hormone

Role: Manages blood sugar. Chronically elevated insulin drives fat storage and blocks fat burning.

What helps: Eating balanced meals with protein and fibre, reducing ultra-processed food, avoiding long gaps between meals.

Thyroid Hormones — The Metabolic Engine

Role: Controls how fast or slow your cells burn fuel. Often sluggish in perimenopause, especially under stress.

What helps: Adequate calories (not too low), selenium and iodine-rich foods, reducing chronic stress, quality sleep.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: most weight loss advice actively worsens all three of these hormones.

Skipping meals spikes cortisol. Extreme calorie restriction tanks thyroid function. High-intensity exercise every day elevates cortisol and insulin. This is why "trying harder" often makes things worse.

Today's Key Insight

Balancing these three hormones requires you to do less of the hard things — not more. Rest, nourishment, and reduced pressure are the medicine.

Today's Action

Write down three things that are creating chronic stress in your life right now. Not to fix them today, but simply to see them clearly. Awareness is the first step to change.
